US ARMY HUMVEE BEING REPLACE BY NEW JOINT LIGHT TACTICAL VEHICLE - JLTV!

One Look at the Army’s New War Vehicle Will Have You Saying ‘Deuces!’ to the Humvees It’s Replacing

BY CHRIS MARTIN

The U.S. military has relied on the versatility and toughness of the High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle (aka Humvee) for more than 30 years, but now there’s a new war-fighting vehicle in town.

The Wisconsin-based truck maker has just been awarded a Pentagon contract worth $6.7 billion to produce almost 17,000 JLTVs for the Army and Marine Corps over the next few years.

Here are some of the reasons why the military likes the JLTV so much:

It’s reportedly 70 percent faster than any tactical wheeled vehicle currently on the market.

It has the maneuverability of a Jeep but can haul more payload than a Humvee.
Its suspension can be lowered or raised electronically so it can be more easily transported from place to place.
It’s about a third lighter than a mine resistant ambush protected (MRAP) truck, so it can be carried by a military helicopter or an amphibious vessel.

It can be equipped with gun turret or missile launch units.

It comes in two-seater or four-seater configurations.

But arguably the most attractive feature of the JLTV is its “Core1080 Crew Protection System,” which boasts IED detection capability, mine resistance, and the protective body armor of a tank. (Hopefully, this means soldiers won’t have to rely on body armor shipped from their parents.)

The plan is for Oshkosh to make more than 55,000 JLTVs, making the total contract worth around $30 billion. The first units should be completed next year and could become part of the Army’s fleet by fiscal year 2018.

Here’s Oshkosh’s promotional video about the JLTV. But be warned: If you like what you see, you won’t be able to buy a consumer version in the near future.
